Why this room

Exams shouldn't cost anyone Asr, Maghrib or Isha.

The masjid's Guidance Centre now serves women's prayers and programmes — as it should. That left the male students who come every day with nowhere to study on the premises.

Most now study at the university library — and during exams, that distance decides whether they make it back in time. Upstairs, the old Book Room has sat unused for years. This project gives it back to the students.

Who's running this

Two former student leaders, seeing it through.

The study room was proposed by the masjid's student community.

Jameel Mohamed

Project lead

Jameel came to Manipal in 2016 to study civil engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating in 2020. From 2018 to 2022 he served as the students’ ameer at Masjid-e-Manipal — the student community’s chosen leader — organising its gatherings and programmes.

In 2020 he founded Get My Bag, a packers-and-movers business serving Manipal’s students. He later founded Campus Bookstore, a medical and dental textbook store in Melaka, Malaysia.

On this project he oversees the design, the contractors and the site work, and reports progress to the Masjid committee at every stage, with every bill shared. Contributions are collected in his bank account.

Project coordinator and treasurer

Maaz graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2025. From 2023 to 2025 he was the student leader at Masjid-e-Manipal, heading its student committee and bringing the community together through events and regular gatherings.

For this project, Maaz first approached Mr. Sameer — son of Parkala Abdullah Harika, who built Masjid-e-Manipal — for permission, then secured the approvals of the Masjid committee and spearheaded the plan and the design with the architect.

He also keeps the project’s books, recording every contribution so the totals on this page stay up to date.
